Director’s Note

On the Stage of Sondheim will a celebrate the unparalleled genius of Stephen Sondheim. In the spirit of Sondheim’s own words, “No fits, no fights, no feuds and no egos. Amigos, together!”, we are thrilled to embark on this collaborative journey with Creede Repertory Theatre and Creede Musical Arts Collective for a second season.

Following the resounding success of last summer’s one-night-only coproduction, A Celebration of Rodgers & Hammerstein, we have expanded our collaboration to offer a five-night run dedicated to the works of Stephen Sondheim. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work in an extended schedule, allowing us to present rotating casts in repertoire highlighting the strengths of each artist, ensuring a fresh and captivating experience for our audiences throughout the summer.

Featuring six singers and two pianists from both organizations spanning diverse musical and theatrical backgrounds, and featuring legends in the field, Graham Ward and Ron Raines, trading off narrator-storytelling duties, we delve deep into Sondheim’s illustrious career. Exploring not only his most iconic shows, songs, and characters, we also trace his journey as a lyricist for Broadway’s legendary composers, such as Jule Styne and Leonard Bernstein. From his early days as a protégé of Oscar Hammerstein II to his evolution into the towering figure of modern musical theatre, Sondheim’s impact and influence are undeniable.

As one of the most influential composer-lyricists in modern musical-theatre history, Sondheim’s work continues to inspire and challenge artists and audiences alike. We pay homage to his unparalleled artistry while celebrating the collaborative spirit that lies at the heart of musical theatre.

We invite you to enjoy this musical adventure as we explore the timeless brilliance of Stephen Sondheim’s repertoire, united in our passion and commitment to the art form.
