Headwaters

What is the Headwaters Program?

One third of the productions CRT has produced over the last 20 years have been World Premieres. Why are new plays so important to CRT? Because they allow us to see beyond ourselves, and delve into the lives and stories of the expansive human experience.

2022 FESTIVAL

AUGUST 26 – 28

three avenues for new work:

The Headwaters New Play Festival

The Headwaters New Play Festival, which takes place annually in late August, presents staged readings of never-produced new plays. Through its new Mainstage/Ruth Commission process, CRT will support the work of new and returning playwrights. Once a playwright receives a commission, they will collaborate with CRT through a series of online and in-person workshops, including a staged reading at the annual Headwaters New Play Festival in late August, and often, with a full scale production in the Mainstage or Ruth spaces. In 2023 and beyond, CRT is seeking Latinx playwrights to collaborate on new works for the CRT stage and to reach the communities of the San Luis Valley and beyond.

The KID Show

The KID Show is a commissioned work which takes local young people (ages 10-18) through the process of creating a fully produced, original show.

Young Audience Outreach Tour

And finally, our Young Audience Outreach Tour (YAOT), which brings high quality musical theatre outside of Creede, particularly to rural and historically neglected communities. This program annually produces an original children’s show, to students in grades K-6, that tours throughout the southwest, Kansas, and more.
