59th “Season of Discovery” Announced
Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) is thrilled to announce its 59th Season of Discovery, featuring a mystery, a comedy, a classic, a new work, and more!
Opening Memorial Day weekend in the Ruth Humphreys Brown Theatre is Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: a Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a fast-paced comedy about everyone’s favorite detective solving his most notorious case. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must crack the mystery of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” before a family curse dooms its newest heir. Watch as five actors deftly portray more than forty characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the truth in time? Get your deerstalker cap on – the play’s afoot!
Next up, in the historic Mianstage Theatre, is Mel Brooks’ hit musical Young Frankenstein. When Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania he finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors with the help of his sidekick Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), sultry lab assistant Inga, and mysterious housekeeper Frau Blücher (~neigh~). Eventually, of course, their creature escapes and hilarity continuously abounds in this theatrical adaptation of the 1974 film.
Prepare to spill the tea in late June with The Importance of Being Earnest in the Mainstage Theatre. The most renowned of Oscar Wilde’s comedies tells the story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Earnest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of Gwendolyn and Cecily, two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Earnest. The pair become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure in this classic comedy of manners. Our production features Christy Brandt as Lady Bracknell and Annie Butler as Miss Prism.
Next up in the Ruth will be our world premeier of Prima’s Guide to Funerals by Leonard Madrid. Commissioned by CRT as part of our Headwaters New Play Festival, Prima’s is a quick-witted comedy about three cousins (primas), an urn, and one really long day. It is a story of laughter, grief, and love that is only possible with the ones who know you the best: your primas.
“I can’t wait to share these plays with our audience,” says Interim Artistic Director Kate Berry. “Every play has an element of discovery – discovering the evidence, discovering how to create life (itself!), discovering your parentage, and discovering who you really are. We also want to encourage folks to discover – or rediscover – all that Creede has to offer from theatre, to outdoor adventure, to fine dining.”
The 59th Season will also feature a 5-concert collaboration between Creede Repertory Theatre and Creede Musical Arts Collective in July and August; the 18th season of Boomtown! Improv Comedy; and our Gala Celebration at the Rio Grande Club on August 2.
Education at CRT will be celebrating 22 years of The KID Show with Maximum Conflict: Eternal Strife a comedy by Steve Moulds and directed by CRT’s Associate Education Director Tyler Horn. There’s a new role-playing game that’s all the rage – though not everyone’s a fan. But when one family casts a magic spell that sucks them inside the game, they have to navigate the cartoonishly violent world of Maximum Conflict to find their way back home. Running July 26 through July 28 at The Ruth, The KID Show offers a professional theatrical experience for students ages 10 to 18 and older through the creation of an original show.
CRT’s flagship program, the Young Audience Outreach Tour, now in its 40th season, is staging the world premiere of Coyote & the Counting Game with book and lyrics by Diana Grisanti and music by Emiliano Messiez. Gaby’s having a rough year. She’s failing 3rd grade math, her genius brother is about to go off to college, and her parents won’t buy her the drum set of her dreams. But when a crafty Coyote comes into her life, she discovers that she might be able to trick her way out of her troubles. A modern-day trickster tale, full of fractions, word problems, and good old-fashioned sibling rivalry. The show will premiere at the Ruth Theatre on August 30 before begining its regional tour.
