PRIMA’S GUIDE TO FUNERALS

by Leonard Madrid
directed by Yesenia García Herrington

Commissioned & produced as part of the Headwaters New Play Program

JULY 12 – SEPT 14
RUTH HUMPHREYS BROWN THEATRE

A comedy in one funeral…
Three cousins (primas), an urn, and one really long day. It’s the day of her mother’s funeral and Arcie is losing her grip. But her cousins Nando and Clara are having none of it. A fast-paced and hilarious world premiere set along the waters of the Rio Grande in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, Prima’s Guide to Funerals tells the story of family, laughter, grief, love, and finding yourself alongside the ones who know you the best: your primas.
World Premiere, Dramedy

Director’s Note

There is something magical about the ability to create something from nothing. A blank page can be filled with words that help us uncover universal truths about our shared humanity and draw us closer to each other.

When we experience the loss of a loved one, I am convinced that they come back to us in multiple forms. It could be the sight of a
cardinal, a familiar melody, or the smell of our favorite comfort foods that provide us with the gift of traveling back in time to experience a moment of nostalgia.

After meeting Leonard Madrid in 2022, I knew I wanted to work with him. I wasn’t sure when or how, but I had hope. His writing and use of language was familiar, joyful, and haha/jaja funny. Being a creative collaborator is where I feel most inspired as an artist, and now I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the world premiere of Prima’s Guide to Funerals at Creede Repertory Theatre!

Working with this creative team to bring this commissioned piece to life has been extremely rewarding. I invite you to embrace Arcie and her primas, Clara and Nando, as they challenge their own notions of family, faith, and life “rules” in this journey of self-discovery. Salud!
