Oh, what a strange, uncertain, and scary time it is right now across the nation and throughout the world. As theatres and nonprofits everywhere are forced to make difficult decisions and act on what little information we have, I am comforted to know that we truly are all in this together. While we might not know with certainty how this season is going to play out, I can say with absolute conviction that Team Education is staying focused on what is most important- the young people we impact each day. With every choice we make, they stay at the forefront of the decision.

In this time of uncertainty, the Education Department has moved to an online presence for our community. We are releasing content every weekday, and we could not be more thrilled in terms of the product or the response. We are also continuing to find hope in the prospect of a stellar KID Show, delightful day camps, and a much-needed Young Audience Outreach Tour, when it is safe to do so. I feel strongly that by the time we are able to meet and gather in person again, the Art will be more imperative than ever. Please stay tuned for information on our 2020 Day Camps and KID Show.

In the meantime, with the announcement of the postponement of our 2020 main season to 2021, I wanted to share with you all a snippet of my Director’s Note for ANNIE. When I wrote this in February, I had no idea how relevant it would be today. I am looking forward to the time when we can all convene together again, but for now, I am looking to Little Orphan Annie for inspiration!

Annie is a true hero- she is a young person who has every reason to be bitter and mad at the world, yet she chooses to find joy every single day. She chooses to be optimistic. She chooses to believe that each day will be better than the day before.

In honor of Annie’s beautiful spirit, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite quotes about choosing joy, finding hope, and believing in the goodness of others. I hope that each person who sees this piece will walk away with a little more sunshine than you came into the theatre carrying.

  • But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. – Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • I don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains. – Anne Frank
  • There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind. – Fred Rogers
  • You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. – Mahatma Gandhi
  • Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence. -Helen Keller

So, if ‘yesterday was plain awful’ just remember that ‘that’s not now, that’s then.’

Tomorrow, there’ll be sun.
